The Jimenez lab? Dr. Erin Jimenez is a Johns Hopkins University professor. She opened her lab in 2023. The Jimenez lab at JHU studies hearing regeneration. Millions of people world-wide experience disabling hearing loss. Hearing loss is largely due to the loss of a sensory cell type, called hair cells, in the inner ear. Humans are unable to replenish hair cells and this results in permanent impairments to hearing and deafness. Non-mammalian species, like zebrafish, are able to completely regenerate their sensory hair cells and repair both auditory and vestibular function after hair cells die or if they are damaged. The Jimenez lab aims to identify regeneration factors using the zebrafish model organism and stimulate a regenerative response in mammals.
The Jimenez lab is composed of graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Erin Jimenez enjoys mentoring and supporting students through various activities. In her office, her students can always find snacks and small meals to eat. Lunch outings, social activities, and celebrations are all supported by Dr. Jimenez's personal finances. Outside of her own laboratory, Dr. Jimenez is a faculty advisor for student outreach groups, such as the JHU SACNAS Chapter and MInDS. Her long term vision is to conduct transformative research, mentor the next generation of scientists, and create an academic environment where everyone can thrive.
